Fact checkers have deemed this quote to be false. Please could somebody clarify where he actually said this. Or whether it is a fake attribution. I personally quite annoyed such a good statement can be branded fake because they cant actually find where it is sourced
Well, when I originally enter it, I couldn’t find a source (thus the “(Attributed)”).
Ultimately, though, the strength and validity of a citation is based on whether there is a documented source where the person said it, secondarily if it “fits” the person it is attributed to. I’m still not able to find any definitive place where Orwell said this. That, coupled with the Wikiquote analysis, inclines me to relabel this as spurious.
That said, it is apparently included in a book titled Orwell on Truth (source), but I can’t find it in the (limited visibility) online version of the book to know how it’s cited.
