Josh Billings (1818–1885) American humorist, aphorist [pseud. of Henry Wheeler Shaw]
Josh Billings’ Cook Book and Picktorial Proverbs (1880)

Unlike the rest of the Billings canon, I have been unable to find a readable online version of this book (which is not an actual cookbook) to verify the quote.

However, the quote is referenced in a period newspapers -- (1880-05-20), (1885-11-14) -- sometimes in conjunction to the book cited (1884-01-24). ]]> https://wist.info/billings-josh/1051/feed/ 0 1051
