The Latin phrase is from <a href="https://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=urn:cts:latinLit:stoa0255.stoa012.perseus-lat1:1.2#:~:text=cedit%20sed%20etiam-,si%20cecidit%20de%20genu%20pugnat.,-%5B7%5D">Seneca, <em>De Provdentia [On Providence]</em></a>, 1.2. <a href="https://hyperessays.net/essays/on-cannibals/#:~:text=If%20his%20legs%20fail%20him%20he%20fights%20on%20his%20knees">It means</a> "If his legs fail him he fights on his knees." <br><br>

Note this was inserted into this passage only in the final, 1595, edition, as was the final sentence (defeats greater than victories).  The most-valiant/most-unfortunate sentence was an addition in the 1588 edition.  <br><br>

As examples of the concluding sentence, he goes on to compare great victories (Salamis, Plataea, Mycale, Sicily) to the "defeat" of Leonidas and his Spartans at Thermopylae.<br><br>

Some editions use the 1588 sequence of chapters, not the 1595, and so identify this as ch. 31.<br><br>

The only place I can find this phrase actually used by him "officially" is in <i><a href="https://archive.org/details/dalecarnegiesscr00carn/mode/2up?q=%22flaming+enthusiasm+backed%22">Dale Carnegie's Scrapbook</a></i> (1959) [ed. Dorothy Carnegie], where (four years after his death) the quote is described as "from the writings of Dale Carnegie" but with no further citation.<br><br>

I was unable to find it online in any books by him. I did find <a href="https://archive.org/details/per_st-louis-post-dispatch_1938-09-12_91_7/page/n27/mode/2up?q=%22flaming+enthusiasm+backed%22">a variant</a> <a href="https://www.loc.gov/resource/sn92070146/1938-09-12/ed-1/?sp=4&q=%22flaming+enthusiasm+backed%22&r=0.065,0.484,0.586,0.35,0">in an essay</a> (1938-09-12) published in newspapers, regarding <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_de_Seversky">Alexander de Seversky</a> (possibly one of Carnegie's "5-Minute Biographies" columns):<br><br>

In the 1946 (Vol. 68-70) <a href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/Fireman_s_Fund_Record/TqopAQAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&bsq=%22flaming%20enthusiasm%22">archive</a> of the <i>Fireman's Fund Record</i>, I did find text reading "... they have flaming enthusiasm backed by horse sense and dauntless courage," but could not confirm the context or whether it was attributed to Carnegie.<br><br>						</span>

[&#8230;] But you get into this thing [&#8230;] and there&#8217;s a gap. For the first couple of years that you&#8217;re making stuff, what you&#8217;re making isn&#8217;t so good. It&#8217;s not that great. It&#8217;s really not that great. It&#8217;s <i>trying</i> to be good, it has ambition to be good, but it&#8217;s not quite that good. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, your taste is still killer. And your taste is good enough that you can tell that what you&#8217;re making is kind of a disappointment to you. That you can tell it&#8217;s still sort of crappy. A lot of people never get past that phase. A lot of people at that point, they quit. [&#8230;] The thing I want to tell you is, everybody goes through that. [&#8230;] It&#8217;s totally normal. And the most important possible thing you can do is do a lot of work. Do a huge volume of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week or every month you know you&#8217;re going to finish one story. [&#8230;] Because it&#8217;s only by actually going through a volume of work that you&#8217;re going to catch up and close that gap. And the work you&#8217;re making will be as good as your ambitions. [&#8230;] It&#8217;s going to take you awhile. It&#8217;s normal to take a while. You just have to fight your way through that.</p>

Ostensibly from a Chinese visitor to London, Lien Chi Altangi, the letters were written by Goldsmith and published in <em>The Public Ledger</em> in 1760-61. Letter 22 has the similar "True magnanimity consists not in NEVER falling, but in RISING every time we fall."<br><br>
