Whether we wake or we sleep,
Whether we carol or weep,
The Sun with his Planets in chime,
Marketh the going of Time.Edward FitzGerald (1809–1883) English writer, poet, translator
“Chronomoros,” l. 33ff, Chambers’s Edinburgh Journal (5 Dec 1840)

FWIW, this poem was first published, apparently anonymously, in the 5 Dec 1840 issue of Chambers’s Edinburgh Journal, p. 368, col. 3 (http://bit.ly/2x1rtaQ).
Ah. And even that references Fulcher’s Ladies’ Memorandum Book and Poetical Miscellany, presumably of 1840.
Which I couldn’t find, although I did find a little more information here: http://bit.ly/2fvJx58. This was also his first work.
