All of your scholarship, all your study of Shakespeare and Wordsworth would be vain if at the same time you did not build your character and attain mastery over your thoughts and your actions.
Mohandas Gandhi (1869-1948) Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist, political ethicist [Mahatma Gandhi]
Speech to students, Agra, in Young India (19 Sep 1929)
A correction: this is from the issue Young India published on 19 Sep 1929, not 1927.
Thanks. The original citation I found indicated 1927, but I found a few more on the 1929 date, so I’ll assume the first was wrong.
I looked at an image of the original publication on the Gandhi Heritage Portal. Issues of “Young India” can be viewed at this link: https://www.gandhiheritageportal.org/journals-by-gandhiji/young-india. Select “Volume 11”, “September”, “Issue 38”, then click on “Show”. Lines 35-38 (approx) of the first column, first paragraph, on p. 307—the third page of eight shown—is where the quote is located.
Thanks!
