Could this be a misattribution? I found the identical passage in Henry Ward Beecher’s /Eyes and Ears/ (1862), a collection of his columns in the /New York Ledger/ called “Thoughts as they Occur, by one who keeps his Eyes and Ears open”. See pp. 155-156 here: http://bit.ly/2rFLDCJ.
