Those who for selfish and private purposes stir up national antagonisms and expose the world to the ruin of war.

Who among American heroes could meet their tests, who would be cleared by their committees? Not Washington, who was a rebel. All privilege based on wealth, and all enmity to honest men merely because they are wealthy, are un-American — both of them equally so. Americanism means the virtues of courage, honor, justice, truth, sincerity, and hardihood — the virtues that made America. The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-first, the love of soft living, and the get-rich-quick theory of life.
